On Friday, a massive boulder suddenly fell from the mountain near Kadu Nala on the Udaipur-Pangi road in Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, crushing a Tata Sumo taxi—which was traveling from Kullu to Pangi—under the debris. A total of 13 people lost their lives in the accident, while two others narrowly escaped.
Six-month-old infant among the deceased
Police stated that a six-month-old infant is among the deceased. Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla confirmed the incident. Upon receiving news of the accident, Tindi police, the local administration, and rescue teams rushed to the site. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing.
Vehicle caught fire after the accident
Police reported that 15 people were traveling in the vehicle, which was en route from Kullu to Killar. The falling boulders completely crushed the vehicle, and its rear section caught fire. Passersby and Army personnel present at the scene attempted to extinguish the flames. Videos of the incident have also surfaced, showing the vehicle completely wrecked and engulfed in flames.
Chief Minister Sukhu issues instructions to officials
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the deaths of 13 people in the Lahaul-Spiti accident. The Chief Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti to immediately visit the site and oversee relief and rescue operations. He also instructed officials to provide all possible assistance to the families of the deceased and ensure the best medical treatment for the injured. He wished the injured a speedy recovery.
15 people were on board; two saved their lives by jumping out
Confirming the incident, Bharmour MLA Janak Raj stated that out of the 15 people in the vehicle, 13 died, while two individuals survived by jumping out. He urged the Deputy Commissioners of Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti to expedite relief and rescue efforts. Police and rescue teams have reached the scene.
Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana stated that 13 people died in the accident. Police reported that a team was immediately dispatched to the site upon receiving news of the incident. Relief and rescue operations are underway, and the administration is closely monitoring the situation.
The victims have not yet been identified.
