In the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, a 28-year-old woman allegedly killed her four minor daughters by throwing them into a well, and subsequently committed suicide by hanging herself. The police suspect that she may have taken this drastic step due to financial distress and despair.
City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Lalit Kashyap stated that the four sisters—aged between five months and seven years—were found dead in a well on Thursday. He added that later, the body of the girls’ mother, Savita Lodhi, was found hanging inside her home in Khamariya village, located approximately 50 kilometers from the district headquarters in the Bundelkhand region.
CSP Kashyap explained that, prima facie, it appears that Savita Lodhi threw her four daughters into a well situated on a local farmer’s field and, upon returning home, hanged herself. Kashyap noted that the bodies of the girls were retrieved with the assistance of villagers.
Kesli Police Station In-charge Lokesh Patel revealed that the woman’s husband, Chandrabhan Lodhi, had abandoned her a year ago. He stated, “She likely took this step due to financial hardship and despair; alternatively, a rift may have developed between the couple due to a desire for a male child, leaving the woman in a state of mental distress.” Patel added that the police are investigating the case from all possible angles.
Speaking from the scene of the incident, the Station In-charge mentioned that the woman had been living with her in-laws and earning her livelihood by farming on a small plot of agricultural land. He further informed that, following the post-mortem examination of the bodies, arrangements are being made for their final rites. As part of the ongoing police investigation, family members of the deceased woman and local residents are being questioned.
