A moderate-intensity earthquake struck the Kashmir Valley on Monday, sending panicked residents rushing out of their homes. The earthquake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale. However, its impact was felt far and wide because its epicenter was in Budgam district.

Disaster management authority officials said the earthquake struck at 5:35 AM and its epicenter was in Budgam district of the valley. The earthquake shook Kashmir, as its epicenter was in Budgam, just 21 km north of the capital city of Srinagar.

People rushed out of their homes in panic as windows and doors rattled from the tremors. Officials were currently gathering reports on potential damage or property losses.

The tremors brought back memories of the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, considered very high intensity.

That earthquake’s epicenter was in Muzaffarabad city of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The earthquake was so powerful that its effects were felt as far away as Tajikistan, Xinjiang, and Afghanistan.

The 2005 earthquake killed more than 80,000 people, and the city of Muzaffarabad in PoK was completely devastated. Approximately 350,000 people were left homeless, while 138,000 people were injured in occupied Kashmir in the 2005 earthquake. Before 2005, another major earthquake struck the valley on May 30, 1885. It was known as the Baramulla earthquake. It was recorded at 6.8 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter of this 1885 earthquake was also in the valley, resulting in widespread damage. It killed at least 3,081 people and caused extensive property damage.

The Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region, including Zanskar, are located in a seismically active zone, where earthquakes have caused devastation in the past.
