Shimla and Manali, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, received the season’s first snowfall on Friday, transforming the roads and mountains into a pristine white landscape. A large number of tourists also arrived to enjoy the snow-covered scenery.
“It has been snowing in Shimla and its surrounding areas since morning. This is the first snowfall of the season in Shimla city,” an official of the meteorological department told news agency IANS.
The meteorological department official said the snowy conditions in Shimla would likely last for a day or two. The official added, “Light snowfall is occurring in the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur, Sirmaur, Mandi, and Shimla districts.”
Snowfall was also reported in places like Kufri and Narkanda near Shimla, making these tourist destinations even more picturesque. “We are grateful to God for this white blanket,” said Nidhi Gupta, a tourist from Ludhiana, Punjab, who was visiting Shimla with her friends.
The magnificent Dhauladhar mountain ranges in the Kangra Valley were also covered with a fresh blanket of snow. Heavy snowfall was reported in Kalpa, about 250 km from the state capital, and in Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district.
Meanwhile, lower areas of the state, such as Dharamshala, Palampur, Solan, Nahan, Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, and Mandi towns, received rainfall, leading to a significant drop in temperature. The snowfall has brought relief to farmers and fruit growers whose orchards were under stress due to the prolonged drought conditions over the past three months.
Traffic was stopped beyond Dhalli, 10 km from Shimla, as a large stretch of the Hindustan-Tibet Road was covered with a thick layer of snow. A government official said that due to heavy snowfall, the entire Kinnaur district and towns like Narkanda, Jubbal, Kotkhai, Kumarsain, Kharapathar, Rohru, and Chaupal in Shimla district have been cut off. The meteorological department stated that a western disturbance, a storm system originating in the Mediterranean-Caspian Sea region and passing through the Afghanistan-Pakistan area, will remain active until Sunday, bringing further rain and snowfall. A meteorologist warned that minimum temperatures could drop by three to four degrees after the skies clear.
