At least 16 people were killed and 18 others seriously injured in a horrific road accident early Monday morning in Semarang city, Central Java province, Indonesia. The accident occurred at an intersection near the Krapyak toll exit, where a speeding bus lost control, crashed into a road barrier, and overturned. According to local authorities, the accident happened in the early hours of the morning when the bus was traveling at high speed. The driver suddenly lost control, and the bus veered off the road and crashed into the barrier. The impact was so severe that the bus overturned, trapping many passengers inside.

How was the bus rescued?

Budiono, head of the Semarang Search and Rescue Office, said the rescue operation was very challenging. He said the bus’s windows were shattered, and the entry points were completely blocked. Many people were trapped inside the bus, and rescue teams had to use special equipment to create access to them. According to Budiono, the rescue team had to carefully navigate inside the overturned bus to reach the injured. Every step was risky due to the broken glass and the twisted structure of the bus, but after several hours of effort, all the victims were successfully extricated.

The Semarang Search and Rescue Office has confirmed that all the injured have been admitted to local hospitals, where they are receiving treatment. The process of identifying the deceased and injured is underway, while police and relevant agencies are investigating the cause of the accident.

Fire in Indonesia

This accident comes just days after another tragic incident in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Five people died in a fire at a residential building in Jakarta. Isnaawa Adji, head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency, said the fire broke out around 8:10 PM on Thursday night. He said 10 fire engines were deployed to the scene, and the fire was brought under control around 11 PM. Initial investigations revealed that the house where the fire broke out was also being used as a warehouse for manufacturing accessories. Officials say the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, although the investigation is still ongoing. These recurring incidents have once again raised concerns about road and fire safety in Indonesia.
