Six Maoists, including top Maoist commander Madvi Hidma, were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Andhra-Odisha border area of Alluri Sitaramaraju district in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. The encounter occurred in the Maredumilli forest area when police from Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha, along with central paramilitary forces, were conducting a search operation following information about the presence of Maoists.

Madvi Hidma, a top Maoist commander and a member of the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee, was reportedly among the Maoists killed in the encounter. Hidma’s wife was also killed in the operation.

His killing is being seen as a major victory for the security forces in anti-Maoist operations. Chhattisgarh police have confirmed Hidma’s death. According to police information, the exchange of fire occurred when security forces surrounded a group of Maoists and asked them to surrender.

The Maoists then reportedly opened fire, forcing security personnel to retaliate. Security forces were continuing their search for some Maoists suspected to have fled deep into the forests. The encounter took place near the tri-junction point of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.

Hidma was considered the most wanted Maoist commander in India. The 43-year-old heads Battalion Number One of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), considered the deadliest Maoist strike unit.

Hidma, carrying a bounty of ₹50 lakh, was the only tribal from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh in the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee. He was accused of masterminding the massacre of 76 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in Dantewada in 2010, the deadliest attack by Maoists on security forces in India.

He was also suspected of involvement in the killing of 27 people, including top Congress leaders, in the Jhiram Valley in Chhattisgarh in 2013. Hidma is also believed to be the mastermind behind the killing of 22 central paramilitary personnel in Sukma, Chhattisgarh, in 2021. The killing of the top Maoist commander comes after a series of successes by security forces in Chhattisgarh.

The encounter proved a major setback for the banned CPI (Maoist) in its efforts to regroup in the Andhra-Odisha border region, once considered a stronghold of Maoist activities.
