Millions turned out for anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ protests across US

The “No Kings” theme is intended to commemorate the anti-British protests that led to the birth of America, the abandonment of monarchy and autocracy, and the adoption of a republican system of government.

Across the United States, from coast to coast, north to south, millions of people participated in protests against President Donald Trump under the banner of “No Kings.” People accused him of taking the country down an authoritarian path.

This protest, sponsored by the Democratic Party, was the second after the first “No Kings Protest” in June, and this time the crowd was larger. Kamala Harris, who lost the election to Trump, posted on X, “I encourage you to join your neighbors in peaceful protest at the No Kings event and make your voices heard. In our country, power belongs to the people.”

The “No Kings” theme is intended to recall the anti-British protests that led to the birth of America, the abandonment of monarchy and autocracy, and the adoption of a republican system of government.

President Trump denied that he has any royal ambitions or is behaving like a king. He told a Fox Business TV interviewer, “They’re calling me a king. I’m not a king.”

The protests were sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign, and some trade unions, such as teachers’ unions. These protests occurred at a time when a deadlock between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate has led to a major government shutdown, with no negotiations to end it.

Democrats are demanding the reinstatement of cuts to medical insurance and healthcare programs, which Trump claims will drain more than $1.5 trillion from the treasury.

Due to this deadlock, the Senate is unable to pass legislation to temporarily fund the government. These protests erupted after Trump sent federal forces into Democratic-run states and took a tougher crackdown on illegal immigrants.

During the government shutdown, Trump has halted funding for programs in several Democratic-run states. The protests centered on Trump’s use of federally controlled troops in Democratic-run states, which he claimed had led to a breakdown in law and order and rampant crime.

He has threatened to take law and order into his own hands in some cities, although there is no provision for presidential rule under the US Constitution. Thousands of protesters blocked New York’s Times Square.

On the West Coast, protests were held in Los Angeles, where federal immigration and other officials clashed with protesters against immigration enforcement.

Meanwhile, large-scale protests took place in Chicago, where Governor J.B. Pritzker has emerged as one of Trump’s harshest critics. Trump has made Chicago and Illinois a centerpiece of his campaign.

Clashes have broken out between federal officials and protesters opposing federal immigration enforcement in the city and suburbs. More than 2,500 large and small protests are planned, and most are underway, including in the national capital.
