Torrential rains since Monday night in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, have brought the city to a complete standstill. According to reports, five people have died from electrocution so far. The heavy downpour has caused waterlogging in many parts of the city, severely disrupting traffic, public transport, and daily life.
Waterlogging submerged pandals and railway tracks
The impact of the rains wasn’t limited to roads. Several railway tracks in Kolkata and Howrah were submerged, disrupting local and long-distance train services.
Water also entered shops and markets in Howrah, and Durga Puja pandals were flooded. Images of heavy waterlogging have emerged from Jadavpur, Baghajatin, Salt Lake, and Golf Green areas of Kolkata.
Durga Puja preparations disrupted
This rain, which occurred before Durga Puja, has increased the difficulties of artists and artisans. Clay idol makers, especially in Howrah, are now struggling to complete their work on time. Pandal construction work has also been affected, causing concern among organizers.
Loss of Life and Administration’s Appeal
Following the deaths of five people, the administration has appealed to residents to maintain a safe distance from electric poles and exposed wires in flooded areas. The civic body has also deployed additional pumps at pumping stations to pump out water.
The city’s pace slows
Heavy rains have caused traffic jams on Kolkata’s roads since Tuesday morning. Waterlogging has caused buses and auto-rickshaws to run intermittently, while smaller vehicles have stopped completely in many areas. Working people and students faced significant difficulties reaching their offices and schools.
Meteorological Department Alert
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall for Kolkata and surrounding districts. According to the department, the delayed monsoon has caused continuous rainfall in the state. Rain is likely to continue in many areas in the next 24 hours also.
