Greed and carelessness are the cause of landslides in devastated Uttarakhand. Be prepared for dire consequences, geologist warns

Dr. M.P.S. Bisht, a geologist at Garhwal Central University, Srinagar, says that subsidence and landslides are rapidly increasing in the foothills of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. Human activities are the primary cause.

The frequent incidents of landslides and landslides in the mountains of Uttarakhand are now raising serious concerns. Experts say that if humans do not stop tampering with nature due to their selfishness and greed, they will face dire consequences in the future.

Dr. M.P.S. Bisht, a geologist at Garhwal Central University, Srinagar, says that the incidence of landslides and landslides is rapidly increasing in the foothills of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. The biggest reason for this is human activities. He said that humans have stopped living in harmony with nature and are continuously weakening the mountains in the name of development. Indiscriminate cutting, construction of tunnels, hotels and lodges, and unorganized building activities are weakening the mountain’s strength.

According to Dr. Bisht, humans are settling where they should not. Settlements and construction activities in sensitive zones are creating new danger zones. If humans do not take action in time, disastrous situations could arise in the coming years.

Citing the example of the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, the geologist said that the Alaknanda and Mandakini valleys were devastated at that time. Debris accumulated in the mountains slid down after rain and landslides, causing widespread devastation. Despite this, humanity has not learned its lesson, and even today, roads and buildings are being constructed over unsafe debris.

Human negligence is behind the increasing landslides in Uttarakhand, with dire consequences, the geologist warned.

He warned that no matter how many crores of rupees are spent, if the natural structure of the mountains is ignored, this debris and slope will one day slide, leading to more major disasters.

Dr. Bisht said, “Nature does not follow human dictates, but rather, humans must follow nature’s dictates. Settlements should not be established where conditions are not habitable. Development plans must necessarily incorporate the opinions of scientists and geologists.”

Dr. Bisht added that landslides and floods are also linked to global factors. Climate change, global warming, shifts in the polar regions, and plate tectonic activity are also increasing the vulnerability of the Himalayan region.
