In the latest incident, debris fell from a mountain onto a railway track in Haridwar. CO GRP Haridwar Swapnil Muyal said that continuous rain has weakened the hillside, making this the third or fourth such incident. While the road was not affected, the track was immediately cleared. The railway department is working on repairs.
15 dead, 16 missing so far
Heavy rain and cloudbursts wreaked havoc in Dehradun and other areas of Uttarakhand late Tuesday night. Rivers overflowed and landslides disrupted normal life. According to the Disaster Management Department, so far 15 people have died and 16 are missing. More than 900 people were stranded at various locations and rescue teams have rescued them.
Dehradun is the hardest hit
Thirteen deaths have been confirmed in Dehradun district, while one death each has been reported from Nainital and Pithoragarh districts. Sahasradhara, Maldevta, Santala Devi, and Dalanwala areas of Dehradun were the worst affected. Sahasradhara recorded 192 mm of rainfall, while Maldevta received 141.5 mm, Hathi Barkala and Jolly Grant received 92.5 mm, and Kalsi received 83.5 mm.
The rains washed away several roads, including the Dehradun-Mussoorie route, and caused several bridges to collapse. Police have appealed to travelers and tourists to stay put and refrain from traveling until the roads are fully restored.
SDRF-NDRF Rescue Operation
According to the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), NDRF, SDRF, and fire brigade teams rescued more than 900 people.
400-500 students stranded at the Devbhoomi Institute, Paunda campus, were rescued.
An SDRF personnel risked his life to rescue a young man who had climbed an electric pole to safely descend using a rope.
Religious sites also submerged
Due to heavy rains, the water level of the Tamsa River (Tons) rose so much that the Tapkeshwar Temple was submerged. Water reached the shoulders of the huge Hanuman statue located in the temple complex. Temple priest Bipin Joshi said that he had never seen such water levels in the last 25-30 years.
