Himachal Pradesh has once again been hit by devastation as the monsoon leaves. Heavy rains on the night of September 15 wreaked havoc in many districts of the state once again. Due to cloudburst, sudden floods and debris in the surrounding areas including the bus stand in Dharampur, Mandi, have created chaos.

What happened in Dharampur?

After the cloudburst in Dharampur, the water level of the Son Khad river suddenly rose, due to which the entire bus stand was submerged and many vehicles were washed away. One person is still missing.

Many houses and shops were filled with debris. The situation has become such that the local people had to climb on the roofs to save their lives. At the same time, there was a stampede in the night itself. The police immediately started the rescue and relief operation.

How much rain was recorded where?

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rains have occurred in many areas including Mandi district in the last 24 hours. Jogindernagar recorded 56 mm of rain, Palampur 48 mm, Pandoh 40 mm, Kangra 34.2 mm.

Heavy rains in places like Nagarota Surian (30 mm), Sarahan (18.5 mm), Murari Devi (18.2 mm), Bhareri (17.6 mm), Karsog (17 mm) have increased the difficulties of the people.

Roads closed, life affected

Many parts of the state received heavy rains on Monday, due to which life has been badly affected. Due to heavy rains and landslides, 493 roads had to be closed for traffic. These include Attari-Leh section of National Highway-3, NH-305 Aut-Sainj section and NH-503A Amritsar-Bhota section.

Power supply also disrupted: 352 transformers were affected. Water supply schemes were also affected at about 163 places.

Data and weather conditions

This monsoon season (1 June to 15 September) saw an average rainfall of 991.1 mm, which is about 44 per cent more, than the normal rainfall of 689.6 mm.

During this period, 409 people lost their lives due to rain, related incidents and road accidents, while 41 people are still missing. The number of deaths in road accidents is 180.

The estimated economic loss to the state has reached about Rs 4,504 crore.
