IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra has warned that heavy rains may cause landslides and flash floods in Uttarakhand in September. Normal life may be disrupted in southern Haryana, Delhi and northern Rajasthan.

He said, “Many rivers originate from Uttarakhand. Therefore, heavy rains mean that many rivers will be in spate and this will affect the cities and towns in the lower areas. Therefore, we should keep this in mind. ” Mohapatra said that heavy rains are also expected in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh.

Increase in rainfall in September

He said that since 1980, there has been a slight increase in rainfall in September. On the other hand, there was less rainfall in this month in 1986, 1991, 2001, 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2019.

The IMD said that the monthly average maximum temperature is expected to be normal to below normal in many areas of west-central, northwest and south India during September.

Temperature will remain below normal

The Meteorological Department said that temperatures are likely to remain above normal in many parts of central-east, east and north-east India as well as some areas of northwest India and western coastal region.

These states were hit by the worst floods in decades in Punjab, with overflowing rivers and broken canals inundating thousands of hectares of agricultural land and displacing millions of people. Cloudburst and flash floods in the Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir triggered landslides and caused widespread loss of life and property.
