Lakhs of trucks and other goods vehicles in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra will go on an indefinite strike from midnight on Tuesday to protest against e-challans for traffic rule violations and other demands, transporters said.
However, others, including operators of buses ferrying school children, have announced to suspend their participation in the strike on the request of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The chief minister told them that it would cause inconvenience to the Varkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal) as Ashadhi Ekadashi is near.
Taking cognizance of the transporters’ strike, the state government constituted a 10-member committee headed by Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar to look into the issue. ‘Vahtukdar Bachao Kriti Sangathan’, an action committee of transporters’ associations in the state, said the indefinite strike will begin from midnight as transporters are upset with e-challans and harassment by enforcement agencies for recovery of e-challans.
“1.5 lakh to 2 lakh trucks and other goods vehicles will go on strike after midnight in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra,” said Uday Barge, convener of the action committee. However, he clarified that vehicles involved in transporting essential commodities including milk, vegetables and medicines have been exempted from the strike.
