The ban on giving petrol and diesel to old vehicles began in Delhi on Tuesday amid tight security.

The Delhi government has installed automatic number plate reader cameras (ANPR) at around 350 petrol pumps in the national capital to detect such vehicles.

The transport department has prepared a detailed deployment plan involving personnel from its own organisation, Delhi Police, traffic police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Several teams of the transport department, traffic police and local police have been deployed at various petrol pumps in south Delhi.

The drive began at 6 am on Tuesday, banning the sale of fuel to petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years.

Teams of transport enforcement and Delhi traffic police were seen deployed at Dhingra petrol pump in Chirag Delhi since morning.

Sub-inspector Dharamvir of the transport enforcement team said, “We are here since 6 am so that no old vehicle is allowed to be refuelled. Petrol pumps have been instructed not to fuel such vehicles.”

He said artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras and automatic hooter systems have also been installed at the pumps to identify old vehicles.

“If any such vehicle comes, the cameras immediately detect it and sound the hooter to alert the staff,” Dharamvir said.

He said in such cases, the vehicles are seized on the spot.

Delhi Traffic Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagan Lal said they are verifying the details of vehicles using their central database.

“The cameras will automatically notify, but our teams are also checking vehicles using the central database. The drive is being carried out in collaboration with local police and transport officials to ensure full compliance and maintain law and order,” ASI Jagan Lal said.

“We have been instructed not to fuel any old vehicle,” Dhingra petrol pump employee Hriday Ram said. As soon as we detect such a vehicle through the camera or we, we immediately alert the police or enforcement team.”

This move is part of the Delhi government’s effort to tackle air pollution.

In 2018, the Supreme Court in its decision banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi.

A 2014 order of the National Green Tribunal also banned parking of vehicles older than 15 years in public places.
