The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday said it has taken suo motu cognizance of reports of alleged assault on two journalists at a police station in Madhya Pradesh and issued a notice to the state’s Director General of Police (DGP). According to the commission, it has directed the DGP to submit a detailed report in connection with the incident within two weeks.
The NHRC said in a statement, “The Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a press release issued by the Press Club of India, New Delhi, which stated that two journalists were allegedly assaulted by policemen in the presence of the District Superintendent of Police in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh.”
The alleged incident is reported to have taken place on May 1. Both the journalists allege that they were assaulted in the presence of the SP at a police station in Bhind for reporting on illegal sand mining. The NHRC said that if the contents of the press release are correct, then it is a serious violation of the human rights of the victim journalists.
The commission said that it has issued a notice to the DGP of Madhya Pradesh in the matter and sought a detailed report. According to a press release issued on May 25, both journalists were also allegedly forced to record a video statement stating that all the matters had been resolved.
