The six-month war in Gaza has killed 10,000 Palestinian women, including an estimated 6,000 mothers, while 19,000 children have been orphaned, a UN report said Tuesday.
Women who survived the Israeli bombing and ground crackdown have been displaced, widowed and facing starvation.
The Gender Alert series on Gaza, produced by UN Women, provides a detailed analysis of the reality of life for women and girls in the Gaza Strip, documenting the destruction.
The publication, titled ‘Lack and Fear’, focuses on the lack of access to water and sanitation services that are critical to women’s health, dignity, safety and privacy.
More than one million Palestinian women and girls in Gaza are facing catastrophic hunger. They have almost no access to food, safe drinking water, toilets, posing a threat to life.
Access to clean water is especially important for breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women, who have higher daily needs. It is also essential for the ability of women and girls to manage menstruation with dignity and safety.
UN Women estimates that 10 million disposable menstrual pads or four million reusable sanitary pads are needed each month to meet the needs of 690,000 women and girls in Gaza.
One woman said, “In Gaza, we (women) cannot meet our most basic needs: eating well, drinking safe water, using a toilet, having (sanitary) pads, bathing, … changing our clothes.” …”
“More than 10,000 women have been murdered so far, of which an estimated six thousand are mothers. Women who survived the bombing face starvation, disease, and constant fear every day. “The war in Gaza is undoubtedly a war on women, who are paying a heavy price for the war,” Suzanne Mikhail, UN Women’s regional director for Arab states, told a media briefing in Geneva.
