High alert has been declared in the Khasi and Jaintia hill areas in Meghalaya in view of the “unstable situation” arising after the recent death of two persons. Last week, two people were found dead in the Ichamati area near the India-Bangladesh international border following an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) in East Khasi Hills district.

Superintendent of Police Rituraj Ravi said two KSU members were caught from their homes in Sohra town on Tuesday and later arrested for their alleged involvement in the murders.

A large number of people led by KSU demonstrated in front of the local police station on Wednesday in protest against the police action and said that its members cannot be treated like militants.

In another incident, unidentified persons hurled a petrol bomb at Mawlai police station in Shillong, destroying a police vehicle, Ravi said. No one has been arrested yet in this incident.

In view of these incidents, Deputy Inspector General of Police DNR Marak has issued an alert to the Superintendents of Police of seven districts of the Eastern Range. The state capital Shillong also falls in the eastern range.

“There is a strong possibility that NGOs may over-progress and target police stations/police vehicles, government properties/buildings and vehicles and non-tribals,” Marak said in the order.

He said the influential KSU is celebrating April 4 as ‘Khasi Awakening Day’ but permission for the same has not been granted in Khaliriyat in East Jaintia Hills district.

Instructing the Superintendents of Police to take precautionary measures like issuing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Marak said that NGOs can conduct a sudden agitation in any district headquarters on Thursday.

“You are directed to take necessary precautions to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage today and targeting government establishments and non-tribals under your jurisdiction,” he said.
