Hualien City, located in the eastern region of Taiwan, is very close to the epicenter of the earthquake, heavy damage is being seen there.

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Taiwan on Wednesday (April 3) morning. Its intensity was measured at 7.5 on the Richter scale, its tremors were felt as far as Japan and the Philippines. This is the worst earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years. According to Taiwan’s Fire Department, 4 people have died and many people are said to be injured.
Many buildings were razed to the ground, electricity also failed
According to the Meteorological Department, the earthquake occurred in Hualien city of East Taiwan. Its intensity was measured at 7.5 on the Richter scale, its center was 34 kilometers below the earth. According to Indian time, earthquake tremors were felt at 5:30 am. The tremors of the earthquake were so strong that electricity was lost in many parts of Taipei. Many buildings were razed to the ground and land slides have also occurred.
Tsunami alert in Japan
Many pictures and videos of the earthquake in Taiwan have surfaced, in which buildings can be seen collapsing. The earthquake has caused massive destruction in Taiwan. After this, train services have been suspended across the country. Many people are feared trapped in buildings. Due to the earthquake, electricity supply was disrupted in many cities.
Immediately after the earthquake, neighboring country Japan became alert and issued a tsunami warning. People have also been asked to leave low-lying areas. Japan says a tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas around Okinawa Prefecture. These tsunami waves can be up to three meters high.
Aftershocks also came
Several aftershocks also occurred in Taiwan. The strongest of these was an aftershock of 6.5 magnitude. The earthquake has caused landslides in the outskirts of Taiwan.
Tsunami alert in Philippines also
Philippines has issued a warning in view of the possibility of tsunami. The Philippines Seismology Agency has issued a tsunami alert for coastal areas of several provinces. Along with this, people living here have been asked to move to higher areas.
More than 2,500 people were killed in 1999
It is the most powerful earthquake to hit Taiwan in the last 25 years, since a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s Nantou County in 1999, killing more than 2,500 people and injuring more than 1,300 others.
An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude occurred in Japan on January 1.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred on January 1, 2024. After this tsunami came here. Waves about 4 feet high (1.2 m) were reported in Wajima town.
Why do earthquakes occur?
The reason behind earthquakes is the collision of the plates present within the earth. There are seven plates inside our Earth, which rotate continuously. When they collide with each other, a fault line zone is formed. Due to which the corners of the surface bend and pressure starts building up there. In such a situation, after the plate breaks, energy is generated, which finds a way out. Due to which the earth starts shaking.
How to measure earthquake intensity
The intensity of earthquakes is measured on the Richter scale. Earthquakes are measured on a scale from 1 to 9. An earthquake is measured from its center (epicenter). Regarding earthquake, it has been divided into four different zones. According to macro seismic zoning mapping, it includes Zone-5 to Zone-2. Zone 5 is considered to be the most sensitive and similarly, Zone 2 is considered to be the least sensitive.
How dangerous is an earthquake of what intensity?
- An earthquake of magnitude 0 to 1.9 is very weak. This can be revealed only through seismograph.
- Whereas an earthquake of 2 to 2.9 intensity causes mild vibration on the Richter scale.
- When an earthquake of magnitude 3 to 3.9 occurs, it feels as if a truck has passed near you.
- Windows may break in an earthquake of 4 to 4.9 magnitude. Also, the frames hanging on the walls may fall.
- If an earthquake of 5 to 5.9 magnitude occurs, the furniture in the house may move.
- If an earthquake of 6 to 6.9 magnitude occurs, the foundation of buildings may crack.
- An earthquake of magnitude 7 to 7.9 is dangerous. Due to this, buildings collapse and pipes in the ground burst.
- An earthquake of magnitude 8 to 8.9 is very dangerous. An earthquake of 8.8 to 8.9 magnitude had caused a lot of devastation in many countries including Japan and China.
- An earthquake of intensity 9 and above causes complete devastation. Buildings collapse. Tsunami occurs near trees, plants and seas.
