The Delhi government has rejected the Centre’s request to convert the Bawana Stadium in the national capital into a temporary jail, saying the demands of the farmers are genuine. Rejecting the request, Delhi Minister Kailash Gehlot said, “The demands of the farmers are genuine and it is the constitutional right of every citizen to protest peacefully. Therefore, it is wrong to arrest the farmers.”

He said, “The central government should invite them for talks and try to find solutions to their genuine problems. The farmers of the country are our ‘Annadata’ and arresting them and treating them like this would be like sprinkling salt on their wounds.” We cannot be a party to this decision of the Central Government.

“Therefore, approval for converting the stadium into a prison cannot be granted,” it said.

Massive traffic jams were seen at the entry and exit points of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as police and paramilitary personnel equipped with anti-riot equipment erected barricades, concrete blocks, iron nails and anti-aircraft guns in view of the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo March’. Walls of containers have been erected.

Police, paramilitary forces have been deployed as security measures at Delhi borders including Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur to prevent farmers from entering the national capital. In this, cement blocks and nails have been installed on the approach roads.

As a precautionary measure, Delhi Police on Monday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) across the city and strengthened the borders. Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora issued these instructions for the next 30 days to ensure law and order amid the planned farmer protests against the central government.

A total of 114 companies, including 64 companies of paramilitary forces and 50 companies of Haryana Police, have been deployed in various districts. These units equipped with anti-riot equipment are deployed in border areas and sensitive districts.

Additionally, surveillance technologies like drones and CCTV cameras are being used to keep an eye on any disruptive activities.
