What to do and what not to do if an earthquake occurs?

  • If you feel the tremors of an earthquake, immediately sit on the floor and keep your head bowed downwards. It would be better if you protect yourself by taking cover under a strong table or furniture.
  • Take special care of the elders and children of the house, encourage them and protect them first by telling them the methods of protection.
  • If the earthquake is very strong, then carefully come out of your homes and go to the open field or road.
  • If the way out of the house is narrow and there are houses built on both sides, then stay inside the house instead of going out.
  • In case of an earthquake, stay away from any heavy and falling objects like glass, window, fan or chandelier etc.
  • If you are lying on the bed, cover your head with a pillow. Keep an eye on children.
  • If you come out of the house and stand in an open ground or on the road, then make sure that there are no electricity, telephone poles or big trees nearby.
  • If an earthquake occurs and you are driving at that time, stop the vehicle at a safe place and remain sitting in the vehicle for some time.
  • Aftershocks can always occur for a few hours after a very strong earthquake. Make arrangements to avoid them in advance. There is no fixed period of time for after shocks to occur. Be patient in such situations and do not pay any attention to rumours.
