The flood situation in Bihar remains grim. Following an embankment breach on Friday, waters from the Gandak River spread into new areas of Saran district. Officials reported that heavy rainfall in Nepal and Uttar Pradesh has caused water levels in the Gandak, Ganga, Kosi, Bagmati, and Ghaghara rivers to rise above the danger mark at several locations, with no immediate signs of respite.
A senior official from the Water Resources Department (WRD) stated that the surging Gandak River has increased the threat to embankments across several districts, including Saran, Gopalganj, East and West Champaran, Vaishali, Supaul, and Patna. He noted that both the left and right embankments are under immense pressure in certain areas.
With more fields, homes, and roads in Saran submerged by floodwaters, the administration has intensified relief and rescue operations. The Disaster Management Department (DMD) stated that 12 NDRF teams and seven SDRF teams have been deployed in the district. The statement added that additional teams have been dispatched from Bettiah, Gopalganj, Bhagalpur, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, and East Champaran as floodwaters spread across various regions.
The department reported that over 3,000 ration packets have already been air-dropped by Air Force helicopters into flood-affected areas, with more than 5,000 additional packets expected to be delivered by evening. The department further noted that the 12 NDRF teams comprise 360 trained personnel who are conducting relief and rescue operations using more than 50 boats. Select Service
The SDRF teams comprise over 140 trained personnel and possess more than 36 boats. The department stated that relief supplies are also being rapidly dispatched to Saran from across the state. The statement added that the district administration is monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts regarding the distribution of relief materials, rescue operations, and the availability of essential services in the affected areas.
