The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) launched an anti-encroachment drive on Monday to widen New Sanganer Road in Jaipur. Action is to be taken against identified illegal structures along a stretch of approximately three kilometers, extending from Gujar ki Thadi intersection to Sodala. Under this campaign, around 260 homes and shops are slated for demolition. Currently, the encroachment removal drive is underway along a one-kilometer stretch.

The designated width of New Sanganer Road is 100 feet, but due to encroachments and illegal constructions, the actual width has shrunk to between 40 and 60 feet in several sections. The JDA is undertaking this action following a Rajasthan High Court order directing the restoration of the road to its prescribed width. The JDA is also required to submit a compliance report to the court by October 6.

Heavy police deployment; traffic diverted

Before the drive began, the JDA had issued notices to the concerned property owners to remove the identified illegal structures. A heavy police force has been deployed at the site as the operation commenced. The section of New Sanganer Road from Gujar ki Thadi to Sanjeevani Hospital has been closed, and traffic is being diverted via alternative routes.

Amidst the JDA’s action, many traders and local residents have begun removing encroachments and vacating their shops and homes on their own. Traders state that the festive season is crucial for business, and demolition drives during this period could adversely affect their shops, businesses, and livelihoods. Fearing damage to their goods and premises, some traders have voluntarily removed the encroachments themselves and have appealed to the government and administration for relief during the festive season.

MLA Gopal Sharma Questions the Action

Civil Lines MLA Gopal Sharma was present at the site with his supporters when the JDA’s drive commenced. He noted that Monday’s operation focused on removing encroachments extending into the road’s right-of-way for a stretch of approximately one kilometer from Gurjar Ki Thadi. According to him, the day’s action prioritized clearing the road boundaries immediately rather than demolishing large, permanent structures.

Gopal Sharma alleged that the JDA had incorrectly identified certain areas, leading to disputes among local residents and traders. He stated that these objections have been conveyed to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and the Minister for Urban Development and Housing, Jhabar Singh Kharra. The MLA also questioned how these structures were permitted to be built and operate for years if they were indeed illegal. He emphasized that since people have been living and conducting business there for a long time, the structures should not be demolished without addressing concerns regarding compensation.

The issue of widening New Sanganer Road and removing encroachments has been ongoing for a long time. With a compliance report due to be submitted to the High Court on October 6, the JDA is currently carrying out operations at the identified locations.
