Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti President Kishore Tiwari said that if the Modi government is really serious about the agricultural crisis prevailing in large parts of the country due to the indifference of monsoon, then PM Modi should raise this issue with Vidarbha in the ongoing special session of the Parliament. Should be discussed.
महाराष्ट्र में 72 घंटे में 7 कर्ज से परेशान किसानों ने की आत्महत्या, शिंदे सरकार पर सवालिया निशान
In the last 72 hours in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, seven farmers have committed suicide due to debt problems. The entire Maharashtra has been shaken by this incident and the state’s Shiv Sena-BJP Eknath Shinde government has come under the scanner. Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti President and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishore Tiwari said that in less than three days, there has been news of suicide of 6 farmers from Yavatmal and 1 from Wardha.
Kishore Tiwari said that those who committed suicide included farmers Praveen Kale of Hiwari in Yavatmal, Trabank Keram of Khidki, Maroti Chavan of Shivni, Gajanand Shinde of Arjun, Tevichand Rathos of Banegaon, Nitin Pane of Jamwadi and Dinesh Madavi of Rantapur in Wardha. Tiwari said six of these suicides took place in the last 48 hours and one suicide took place a day earlier on Sunday.
Kishore Tiwari said most of them are from deprived sections of the society and they took the step due to heavy debt burden, crop failure and little or no help from the state government. He said that with the latest deaths, the number of farmers committing suicide in the state has increased to 1586 since January 2023. He further said that every day there are reports of suicide of one or two farmers from a small area like Vidarbha.
The leader of the Uddhav Thackeray faction said that the situation in other states would hardly be known. Yet, the central government is making tall claims of making India a five trillion US dollar economy in the future, how is this possible. He said that if the government is really serious about the agricultural crisis prevailing in large parts of the country due to indifference of monsoon, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi should discuss the issue with Vidarbha in the ongoing special session of Parliament.
Tiwari said that despite the claims of the Central and State government, the main issues of cost, crop and credit have not been addressed, thus forcing the farmers to end their lives. Relief packages are announced with great fanfare, but they have failed to provide relief to the collapsed rural economy.
The Vidarbha leader said that along with the complexities of climate change, the uneven monsoon this year has led to drought-like conditions, greatly reducing demand for cotton, the main cash crop, in at least 10 districts around Maharashtra. There has been an unprecedented increase in input costs and less credit is being provided by public sector banks. He said all these together have put brakes on the rural economy, coupled with the government’s failure to promote sustainable food pulses and oilseed crops in the region, leaving farmers with no option but to commit suicide.
