The Congress has targeted the Modi government over the surge in onion prices. Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh asked the government how the poor and middle class—who are already grappling with inflation and unemployment—are supposed to make ends meet.
Citing a report from a Hindi daily, Jairam Ramesh stated in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that inflation is skyrocketing under the Modi government’s rule. He said, “After sugar, onions are now also slipping out of the common man’s reach. Onion prices have risen by up to 76 percent in a month, wholesale rates across states have doubled, and the government’s buffer stock lies empty.”
The Congress General Secretary claimed that “milk, oil, fruits, and essential rations are all becoming unaffordable for the common person.” He added, “On one hand, there is unemployment, while on the other, people who have been employed for years are losing their jobs. Amidst this, the ‘inflation bomb’ keeps exploding.”
Ramesh asked, “The Modi government, which promised ‘Achhe Din’ (good days), must explain: how are the poor and middle class supposed to make ends meet?”
After Sugar, Onions Now Bringing Tears
Following the rise in sugar prices, onion prices have now surged. Over the past month, the price of onions has doubled in many parts of the country. According to data from the Department of Consumer Affairs, the retail price of onions in Delhi has reached ₹65 per kg, up from ₹35 a year ago. Similarly, onions were selling at ₹58 per kg in Chennai, compared to ₹33 last year.
