Stampede at Singheshwar Temple in Bihar’s Madhepura; several injured, India

A large number of devotees gathered at the famous Singheshwar Dham temple in Madhepura, Bihar, on the last Monday of the holy month of Shravan to offer Jal-abhishek (ritual water offering) and seek blessings from Lord Shiva. A crowd began to build up at the temple’s main entrance early in the morning. Soon, the pressure of the crowd intensified to the point where the situation became unmanageable, creating a near-stampede-like scenario.

According to eyewitnesses, a scramble to get ahead ensued among the devotees as they tried to enter the temple. Amidst this, some people lost their balance and fell to the ground, triggering panic and screams at the scene. People rushed to help, working to pull out the devotees who had fallen and were trapped.

Six Devotees Injured; Treatment Underway at Hospital

Reports indicate that approximately six devotees were injured in the incident. The injured reportedly include four women and two men. Security personnel deployed at the site immediately brought the crowd under control and safely rescued those who had fallen.

The injured were promptly taken to Madhepura Medical College Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. A team of doctors is monitoring their condition.

Situation Deteriorated Between 6:25 AM and 7:00 AM

The incident reportedly occurred at the temple’s main entrance between 6:25 AM and 7:00 AM. A large turnout of devotees had been anticipated due to it being the last Monday of Shravan, and the administration had made arrangements for security and crowd control.

As the crowd pressure mounted, police and administrative officials immediately took charge of the situation. Volunteers from social organizations assisted security personnel with relief and rescue efforts.

Administration Takes Control; Security Beefed Up

Upon learning of the incident, the administration further tightened security arrangements within the temple complex. The District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police personally monitored the situation. Additional police forces have been deployed, and surveillance has been increased to manage the crowd within the temple premises.

The situation is currently under control, and the arrangements for worship and darshan (viewing the deity) have resumed smoothly. Police and administrative officials are present at the site, ensuring the safety of the devotees.
