Panic ensued following a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia early Saturday morning. Two fatalities have been reported so far. A tsunami warning has been issued due to the potential risk following the undersea quake.
Several aftershocks have also been felt since the initial earthquake. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake’s epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers beneath the seabed.
Earthquake struck at 4:58 AM; three aftershocks recorded
According to the EMSC, the earthquake occurred at approximately 4:58 AM local time. At least three aftershocks were recorded following the main tremor. With the tremors continuing to be felt, fear prevails among residents in the affected areas, and there are concerns about further shocks.
Following the undersea earthquake, Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning for certain areas as a precautionary measure. Agency teams are monitoring the situation and assessing the earthquake’s impact as well as the potential tsunami threat.
No tsunami threat to Australia
Australia’s tsunami warning agency has clarified that there is currently no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, its islands, or other territories resulting from this earthquake. This has brought a sense of relief to Australia.
Residents reported that the strong tremors damaged several buildings, causing people to rush outside in panic. According to reports, the waiting area of the Pelni port terminal in Maumere collapsed.
