The dispute arose primarily because the Kanwariyas insisted on passing through the town’s main market instead of following the designated route. Citing security concerns, the police attempted to stop them, leading to a standoff that lasted for hours.

Urging the use of the designated and safe route

As a large group of Kanwariyas reached Kaliram Gate, they attempted to head towards the main market. Police personnel deployed at the scene stopped them to maintain law and order and ensure smooth traffic flow. The police urged them to proceed via the safe route previously designated by the administration.

The Kanwariyas became agitated upon being stopped. They staged a sit-in protest on the road and began shouting slogans and creating a commotion against the police and administration. They argued that they had been using this route every year and should not be stopped. The disturbance caused a traffic jam at Kaliram Gate and surrounding roads for a considerable time, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, senior police officers arrived at the scene with additional reinforcements. Displaying great restraint and tact, the officers managed to pacify the Kanwariyas. The police explained that the main market’s narrow lanes and heavy crowds posed potential safety risks.

After prolonged persuasion and assurances regarding their safety, the Kanwariyas finally calmed down and agreed to proceed along the route designated by the administration. Only then did the police administration breathe a sigh of relief, and traffic flow in the area was restored.

Vehicles participating in the ‘Dak Kanwar Yatra’ are arriving in Haridwar, placing significant pressure on the highway. In light of this, police teams at the Narsan border are actively redirecting Kanwar Yatra vehicles traveling in the wrong direction into the correct lanes to prevent accidents.
