The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court has convicted ‘Tehelka’ founder Tarun Tejpal in the high-profile 2013 sexual assault case. The court set aside the 2021 verdict of the Mapusa Sessions Court, which had acquitted him of all charges. The quantum of the sentence in this case will be announced at 2:30 PM.
High Court overturns verdict following Goa government’s appeal
In 2021, the Mapusa Sessions Court had acquitted Tarun Tejpal of all charges. Subsequently, the Goa government challenged this verdict in the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court. After hearing the matter, the High Court set aside the trial court’s judgment and convicted Tejpal.
Convicted under these sections
A division bench comprising Justice Dr. Neela Gokhale and Justice Amit Borkar found Tarun Tejpal guilty of rape and sexual assault under Sections 376(2)(f) and 376(2)(k) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, he was convicted under Sections 354A and 354B. In its order, the court stated that the trial court’s judgment and order are set aside and Tarun Tejpal is convicted.
Sentencing to be announced at 2:30 PM
Following the High Court’s conviction verdict, all eyes are now on the sentencing. The court has clarified that the sentence to be awarded to Tarun Tejpal will be announced on Thursday at 2:30 PM. With this decision, the legal proceedings in this high-profile 2013 case have taken a new turn.
