Six members of the same family died after a dilapidated, nearly 100-year-old house collapsed amidst continuous rainfall in the Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. One family member survived the incident and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. A pall of gloom has descended upon the entire area following the tragedy.

Police officials stated that the incident occurred late at night in the Mahuli neighborhood under the jurisdiction of the Pratapgarh City Kotwali police station. Amidst persistent rain, the century-old, dilapidated house suddenly collapsed. At the time of the accident, all family members were sleeping in a single room—likely because the air conditioner was running—resulting in the entire family being buried under the debris.

Six Dead, Including Two Children

Six members of the family, including two young children, died tragically on the spot, while a young man sustained serious injuries. The injured individual has been hospitalized for treatment. Upon receiving the information, a large police force, led by City Circle Officer (CO) Ashutosh Mishra, arrived at the scene. Police and rescue teams cleared the debris and retrieved the victims.

City CO Ashutosh Mishra told the news agency IANS, “Around 2 AM, the Kotwali police station received information that the roof of a house in the Mahuli area had collapsed, trapping Pramod Srivastava and five other family members under the rubble. Police and fire brigade teams immediately reached the site, cleared the debris, and rushed all the victims to the district hospital, where doctors declared them dead.”

The deceased have been identified as 60-year-old Pramod Srivastava, his wife Rita (55), son Nitin (25), daughter-in-law Madhuri (23), and grandsons Madhav (one year old) and Advik (10 months old). The injured young man has been identified as Aman Srivastava. Aman Srivastava, a survivor of the incident, said, “When I woke up, I realized I was buried under the debris. Somehow, I managed to get out and saw that all my family members were trapped. I initially tried to rescue them myself but failed, so I started shouting for help. Family members, neighbors, and others gathered at the scene. All seven of us were sleeping in the same room; my parents, younger brother, wife, and our two small children were inside. I was rescued, but they all perished.”

A neighbor, Poonam Srivastava, told IANS, “The entire family was asleep when the roof suddenly collapsed. Debris from the upper floor fell onto the ground floor, trapping everyone inside as they slept. There were seven family members in the house. One person was rescued alive, while six others—including two children—lost their lives.”
