A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck northeastern Japan, with tremors felt across several prefectures and as far as Tokyo. As a precautionary measure, some bullet train services were also suspended.

Powerful earthquakes striking two different parts of the world on Thursday morning have raised concerns. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake was felt in the northeastern region of Japan, while Venezuela experienced two major earthquakes within a span of just a few minutes. While rail services in Japan were disrupted following the tremors, fears of significant casualties and widespread devastation have arisen regarding the situation in Venezuela.
Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake in Japan; Tremors Felt Across Several Prefectures
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake struck near the Pacific coast of Iwate Prefecture around 7:30 AM on Thursday. Its epicenter was located approximately 50 kilometers below the surface. Officials have clarified that there is no risk of a tsunami following the earthquake.
The agency reported that on Japan’s 7-level seismic intensity scale, an intensity of “Upper 6” was recorded in Hashikami and “Lower 6” in Hachinohe (both in Aomori Prefecture). Additionally, tremors of “Upper 5” intensity were felt in Sannohe, Morioka, and several other areas. According to a Kyodo News report, the impact of the earthquake was observed in the prefectures of Miyagi, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima, as well as in the capital, Tokyo, and surrounding regions.
Impact on Rail Services Following Tremors
The Japan Meteorological Agency noted that during tremors of “Upper 6” intensity, it becomes extremely difficult for people to stand or walk normally. Under such conditions, there is an increased likelihood of unsecured furniture and other objects shifting or falling.
Following the earthquake, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) temporarily suspended operations of the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train between Sendai and Shin-Aomori stations as part of safety checks. The railway network was inspected as a precautionary measure. Two Major Earthquakes in Venezuela Within a Minute
Meanwhile, concerns have mounted in Venezuela following two powerful earthquakes that struck just a minute apart. According to a report by the news agency Xinhua, the US Geological Survey (USGS) first reported a 7.1 magnitude earthquake, followed immediately by a second, more powerful tremor measuring 7.5 in magnitude.
Both earthquakes struck near the coastal city of Morón, located approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas. The epicenters were at a depth of only 10 kilometers, heightening fears of significant damage. Reports indicate that buildings have collapsed in the capital, Caracas.
Fear of Extensive Damage; Situation Being Monitored
The USGS has warned of the potential for significant casualties and property damage following these earthquakes. The shallow depth of the tremors has increased the risk of devastation in the affected areas. Local authorities and agencies are currently monitoring the situation, and damage assessments are underway.
These earthquakes in Japan and Venezuela have once again demonstrated how rapidly natural disasters can disrupt normal life.
