Heavy rains following the arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai have led to waterlogging in several areas. Amidst the waterlogging and traffic disruptions, local train services have also been affected, while the Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the next few hours.
मुंबई पानी-पानी हर साल यही कहानी, पहली बारिश में ही फूटपाथ धंसा, सड़कें-रेल ट्रैक डूबे
With the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai, the city is once again grappling with waterlogging and traffic woes. While the long-awaited rain brought relief from the heat, the very first spell of heavy downpour exposed the city’s perennial problems. Roads in several areas are inundated, underpasses have had to be closed, and local train services have been disrupted.
Underpasses Closed; Traffic Crawls on Roads
The monsoon, which reached Mumbai on June 23, began making its impact felt last night. Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in several underpasses, including the Andheri Subway. As a safety precaution, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has halted vehicular movement through these underpasses. Waterlogging has also been reported on the Western Express Highway, while roads in areas like Sion’s Gandhi Market are submerged.
Commuters heading out for work and other tasks in the morning faced the dual challenge of traffic jams and waterlogged streets. BMC teams are actively working to drain water from various areas and restore normalcy.
Impact on Railway Services
The incessant rain has also affected local train services, often referred to as Mumbai’s lifeline. Railway tracks at Dadar station were flooded, causing delays for several local trains and leading to the cancellation of some services. Reports of waterlogging have also emerged from other railway stations, including Mumbai Central and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Videos showing streets resembling rivers are going viral on social media. The issue of waterlogging, which surfaces every year at the onset of the monsoon, has once again become a topic of discussion.
IMD Alert: Rain Likely to Continue Today
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg. A ‘Red Alert’ has also been issued for certain areas. According to the Meteorological Department, moderate to intense rainfall, with heavy downpours in some areas, is expected in these regions.
Dense cloud cover and moderate to heavy rain are also forecast for Mumbai throughout the day on June 24. The Meteorological Department has warned that this could lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Monsoon arrives in Mumbai with a 13-day delay
According to BMC data, rainfall ranging from 71 mm to 99 mm was recorded across various parts of Mumbai over a span of 5 to 6 hours last night. Meanwhile, the highest rainfall—78.96 mm—was recorded in the Nair Hospital area of Central Mumbai between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM on June 23.
The Southwest Monsoon reached Mumbai on Tuesday, June 23. It arrived with a delay of 13 days, as the normal date for the monsoon’s onset in Mumbai is June 10. According to the IMD, the monsoon has now advanced to cover the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, additional areas of Maharashtra, Mumbai, Telangana, and Odisha, as well as parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
