7 dead, 67 hospitalised after ammonia leak at TN seafood unit, India

An ammonia gas leak occurred on Sunday at the Peter & Paul Seafood Export Company, located in Kannagipair village near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.

A major accident occurred on Sunday (June 21, 2026) in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, due to an ammonia gas leak. Seven women have lost their lives in this tragic incident so far. Reports indicate that the incident took place at a seafood export facility in Kannigaipair, near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. At least 67 people are reported to have been affected by the incident.

NDRF’s Special CBRN Response Team Deployed at District Administration’s Request

Citing information from the Tiruvallur District Collector’s office, news agency ANI reported that the 4th Battalion headquarters of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was immediately alerted upon receiving news of the accident, and a team was activated to handle the emergency.

Following a request from the district administration, a specialized Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) response team—led by Akhilesh Kumar, Senior Commandant of the NDRF’s 4th Battalion—was immediately deployed to the site.

NDRF Team Working to Neutralize the Gas Leak’s Impact

According to reports, the rescue team that arrived at the site from the state capital, Chennai, comprises 30 NDRF personnel. They are fully equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), gas detection devices, and specialized rescue gear for the emergency operation.

The NDRF rescue team is currently engaged in moving those affected by the leak to safe locations, identifying the source of the ammonia leak, and assessing and neutralizing the impact of the gas. Additionally, the team is working alongside the district administration to ensure the safety of local residents and prevent any further major untoward incidents. Tamil Nadu CM Constitutes Three-Member Committee to Probe Accident

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the gas leak accident. The committee has been directed to submit an interim report within 24 hours and a detailed report following a thorough investigation within three days. This high-level committee will comprise the Director of Industrial Safety and Health, the Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and the Additional Director of the Public Health Department.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and ordered strict action against those responsible. The government has announced compensation of ₹2 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
