Earthquake tremors were felt in Leh at 6:05 AM on Thursday. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale. The earthquake’s hypocenter (focus) was located just 10 kilometers below the surface, with coordinates recorded at 36.881° North and 74.402° East.

Because it was a shallow earthquake, the tremors were felt quite intensely. A shallow earthquake is one that originates at a depth of between 0 and 70 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
According to scientists, earthquakes can occur at depths ranging from the surface down to 700 kilometers. USGS data categorizes this entire range into three segments: shallow, intermediate, and deep earthquakes. Shallow earthquakes are generally considered more dangerous. This is because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to reach the surface, causing the ground to shake more violently and increasing the risk of damage to buildings and loss of life and property.
Earlier, an earthquake had also struck the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh at 3:36 PM on August 5, 2026. It measured 5.4 in magnitude. The epicenter was located at 29.008° North and 94.739° East, at a depth of 17 kilometers. A foreshock measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale occurred five minutes prior to the main tremor. Within two hours of the main earthquake, a significant aftershock of magnitude 5.1, along with several smaller tremors, was recorded north of the epicenter. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Dibrugarh (approximately 171 km north of Dibrugarh, Assam; 233 km northwest of Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh; 241 km northeast of Itanagar; 256 km north of Jorhat, Assam; and 299 km north of Mokokchung, Nagaland). Officials have appealed to the public not to pay heed to rumors and to follow the administration’s instructions in the event of any emergency.
