The search for missing individuals continues following an avalanche and heavy snowfall on the Kedartal trek in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. On Wednesday, rescue teams recovered the body of another trekker, bringing the confirmed death toll from the incident to three. The missing group included seven trekkers from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, along with a local guide.

Three bodies recovered so far; search continues for five others

Following the incident, which occurred at an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters, two bodies were discovered buried under the snow on Tuesday. A third body was recovered on Wednesday. According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), all three bodies—two men and one woman—have been transported to the Matli helipad via helicopter.

Meanwhile, the SDRF, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), the Forest Department, and other rescue agencies are conducting a joint operation to locate the remaining five missing individuals.

Adverse weather and heavy snowfall pose challenges

Relief and rescue operations in the Kedartal area are being hampered by persistent bad weather and heavy snowfall. The avalanche has left large areas covered in snow and blocked several routes, making it extremely difficult for rescue teams to reach the missing persons.

13-member group set out for the trek on October 27

According to officials, a 13-member group—organized through the ‘Soul Seeker Trekking Agency’ and authorized by the Forest Department—departed from Gangotri for the Kedartal trek on October 27. The team consisted of seven trekkers and six support staff.

One cook from the group returned midway. The remaining members were scheduled to return by October 29, but their return was prevented by adverse weather, heavy snowfall, and an avalanche along the route. Help Requested via Phone on October 30

On October 30, the trekkers contacted a trekking agency by phone, reporting that they were stranded near Kachhi Dhang (Kedarkhadag). They requested assistance to get out safely.

Following this, the agency dispatched a team of porters and guides, who attempted to clear a path for about six kilometers. Upon receiving the information, the district administration launched an official rescue operation on the morning of October 31. Teams from the Forest Department, the NDRF, and other agencies were deployed for this purpose.

Four People Found Safe; Missing Trekkers Include Individuals from Bengal and UP

During the rescue operation, four individuals—three porters and one cook—were rescued safely from the vicinity of Kachhi Dhang. However, eight others could not be located, as the routes were blocked due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.

The missing individuals include five trekkers from West Bengal, two from Uttar Pradesh, and a local guide from Uttaron village in the Uttarkashi district. So far, three bodies have been recovered, while the rescue operation continues in search of the remaining five people.
