A major tragedy struck late Thursday night in the Yamuna River within Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district. Near Kutubpur village, under the jurisdiction of the Kurara police station, a boat carrying a total of nine people suddenly capsized. Three individuals were safely rescued following the accident, while the bodies of a woman and a child have been recovered. Meanwhile, four children are still reported missing. Relief and rescue operations are facing significant difficulties due to continuous heavy rainfall and the strong currents of the river.
According to reports, the wedding of the daughter of Deshraj Nishad—a resident of Kutubpur village—took place on Wednesday. Numerous relatives had arrived in the village to attend the wedding festivities. On Thursday, some family members crossed over to the other side of the Yamuna River to eat watermelons and muskmelons. It is reported that Vishnu Nishad took his wife and seven children—relatives of the family—across the river by boat to visit the melon fields. There, they harvested watermelons and muskmelons, loaded them onto the boat, and were making their way back to the village.
Chaos and Screams Erupt as Boat Capsizes
According to eyewitnesses, as the boat reached the middle of the Yamuna River, it suddenly lost its balance and overturned. The moment the boat capsized, all those on board were swept away by the strong currents. Following the incident, the scene was engulfed in chaos and screams of distress.
During the accident, Vishnu Nishad and one child managed to save their lives by swimming to safety. Additionally, another child was safely pulled out of the water by local fishermen. However, the remaining six individuals went missing in the river. During the ongoing search operation, the bodies of a woman and a child have been recovered, while four children remain missing. The disappearance of the children has cast a pall of gloom over the families, and distraught relatives are sitting along the riverbank, anxiously searching for their loved ones.
Search Operation Underway with Assistance from SDRF and Divers
Upon receiving news of the incident, police and administrative officials immediately rushed to the scene. A search operation was launched without delay with the assistance of divers. The administration has also intensified search efforts in the surrounding areas. According to officials, assistance is being sought from various rescue teams—including the SDRF—and the search for the missing children remains ongoing.
Rescue teams are facing significant difficulties due to the river’s strong currents and rising water levels. The administration states that every possible effort is being made to locate the missing children as quickly as possible. Currently, an atmosphere of mourning and anxiety prevails throughout the entire village.
