Six children drowned in floodwaters in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Monday. The incident occurred in Narayanpur village, under the jurisdiction of the Sultanganj police station. The deceased include four boys and two girls.

A tragic incident on Tuesday morning at Narayanpur Bahiyar, within the Ajgaivinath Dham block of Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, has shaken the entire region. Six children met an untimely death by drowning in deep water while bathing in a submerged field at the Bahiyar during the auspicious Karma-Dharma festival—a celebration of folk faith. The simultaneous loss of lives from six families has plunged the entire rural area, including Bishnu Tola, into grief and mourning, with cries of anguish filling the air.
The deceased have been identified as: Puja Kumari (13), daughter of Puran Mandal; Rahul Kumar (14); Vikas Kumar (13), son of Ranjan Kumar; Ayush Kumar (12), son of Vinod Mandal; Meenakshi Kumari ‘Minki’ (12), daughter of Valmiki Mandal—all residents of Bishnu Tola (Ward No. 27, Nagar Parishad area); and Jyoti Kumari (14), daughter of Dhananjay Mandal, a resident of Ranchdidipur.
Children slipped into a deep pit while bathing for Karma-Dharma
According to local villagers, the children had gone towards Narayanpur Bahiyar in the morning to prepare for the Karma-Dharma rituals and take a holy bath. Due to the rising water level of the Ganges and recent rains, deep water had accumulated in the fields of the Bahiyar.
While bathing, one child’s foot suddenly slipped into deep water. Seeing the child drowning, the others tried to save them; however, unable to gauge the depth and the nature of the marshy bed, all six children—holding hands—sank into the deep water.
Villagers rushed upon hearing screams; doctors at the CHC declared them dead
As soon as news of the incident reached the village, hundreds of villagers and family members rushed frantically towards the Bahiyar. Showing great promptness, local youths who were swimmers jumped into the water and, after a strenuous effort, pulled out all six children in an unconscious state.
Villagers immediately rushed them to the Community Health Centre (CHC), where the attending doctors declared all six children dead after a thorough examination. As soon as the doctors made the announcement, the hospital premises were filled with the heart-rending wails of the grieving families. Upon receiving news of the incident, local police and administrative officials arrived at the scene, and the necessary legal formalities are being completed.
