A massive explosion at a coal mine on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, has resulted in a major tragedy. At least 32 workers have been confirmed dead so far, while 10 others remain trapped inside the mine. Officials state that relief and rescue operations are ongoing, though conditions inside remain extremely challenging.
How did the explosion occur?
According to government mine inspector Ghani Baloch, preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by a buildup of methane gas inside the mine. Following the accident, rescue teams initially recovered the bodies of seven workers, and four more were retrieved later. Officials say the rescue operation will continue until all workers are accounted for; however, there are fears that the death toll could rise further.
Ghani Baloch explained that an explosion involving methane gas depletes oxygen levels within the mine, significantly reducing the chances of survival for those trapped inside. Consequently, rescue teams are proceeding with extreme caution.
What did the government say?
Balochistan’s Minister for Mines and Minerals, Shoaib Nosherwani, stated that rescue workers are operating under difficult conditions and the provincial government is providing all possible support. Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, he announced compensation of 500,000 Pakistani rupees for the next of kin of each victim. He further added that a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion would be conducted and that mine safety protocols would undergo a comprehensive review to prevent such accidents in the future.
Was there negligence regarding safety?
Following the accident, the coal mine workers’ union raised concerns about the disregard for safety standards. The Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation has demanded that the government ensure strict adherence to safety regulations in mines and take stern action against companies that violate these rules.
