The wholesale inflation rate rose to 11.39 percent in September 2026. An increase in output PPI was also recorded, driven by a surge in the prices of fuel, food items, and manufactured products.

- The inflation rate in the fuel and energy sector reached 25.85 percent, while it stood at 9.76 percent for manufactured products.
- Wholesale food inflation also increased to 8.66 percent in September from 7.05 percent in August.

Wholesale inflationary pressure in the country intensified further in September 2026. According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday, WPI-based inflation rose to 11.39 percent. This rate was 9.92 percent in August. A sharp rise in wholesale prices has been recorded for the second consecutive month, signaling mounting pressure on raw material and production costs.
The composite Wholesale Price Index for all commodities rose to 112.5 in September, up from 110.8 in August. The impact of rising prices was evident across all three sectors: primary articles, fuel and energy, and manufacturing. This clearly indicates that inflationary pressure was not confined to any single sector.
Surge in prices of fuel and manufactured products
According to the data, the inflation rate for primary articles stood at 8.67 percent in September, compared to 7.76 percent in August. In the fuel and energy sector, the rate climbed from 22.93 percent to 25.85 percent. Meanwhile, inflation for manufactured products rose to 9.76 percent from 8.37 percent in August. Increases were observed across all three sectors at the index level. In September, the index stood at 120.3 for primary articles, 110.5 for fuel and power, and 110.2 for manufactured products. Price hikes in mineral oils, crude petroleum and natural gas, coal and lignite, basic metals, chemicals, textiles, rubber and plastic products, and electrical equipment were among the key drivers of the rise in wholesale inflation.
Food inflation also rises; potential impact on retail prices ahead
The rise in food item prices within the wholesale inflation data was also a cause for concern. The WPI Food Index—comprising primary food articles and manufactured food products—rose by 8.66 percent year-on-year in September, up from a growth rate of 7.05 percent in August. Rising cost pressures in the food supply chain raise the possibility of an impact on retail inflation in the future.
Output PPI rises; raw material cost pressures persist
The Output Producer Price Index (PPI) also climbed to 112.5 in September, up from 110.8 in August. Increases in producer prices were recorded in the agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining, and manufacturing sectors, while the index for the electricity sector remained relatively subdued.
Meanwhile, the experimental Input Producer Price Index (IPPI) for the manufacturing sector stood at 106.1 in September. This index reflects cost pressures associated with raw materials and other inputs used by industries.
The government has also released the final revised data for July. According to these figures, the WPI index for July remained unchanged at 110.0, with the final inflation rate for the month standing at 9.78 percent. The Output PPI for July also remained stable at 109.9 following the revision.
