Her singing was characterized by such exceptional diction, emotional depth, and sweetness that every song resonated deeply with the heart; yet, did you know that Lata Mangeshkar formally studied Urdu to refine her Urdu pronunciation? An interesting anecdote involving the legendary actor Dilip Kumar lies behind this.

It is said that in 1947, music composer Anil Biswas introduced Lata Mangeshkar to actor Dilip Kumar. This meeting was particularly significant because Lata was in the early stages of her career, while Dilip Kumar had already established himself as a major name in the film industry.
When Dilip Kumar learned that Lata Mangeshkar was Maharashtrian, he commented on her Urdu pronunciation. He remarked that singers unfamiliar with the Urdu language often struggle to pronounce Urdu words correctly. At the time, this comment stung Lata Mangeshkar.
However, she did not view the remark merely as criticism. She reflected seriously on it and decided to learn Urdu upon returning home. To this end, she began taking lessons from a learned Maulana. She focused on mastering the pronunciation of Urdu words, their correct usage, and the nuances of the language.
Later, Lata Mangeshkar recalled this meeting and her experience of learning Urdu in Dilip Kumar’s autobiography, The Substance and the Shadow: An Autobiography. He described that remark as a sort of unexpected gift. He believed that the conversation inspired him to recognize his shortcoming and overcome it.
