According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the initial magnitude was 7.4, with the epicenter located at a depth of 115 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the Colombian Geological Service reported an initial magnitude of 6.7. The strong tremors forced people to evacuate their homes and buildings. The tremors were felt in the capital, Bogotá, as well as in the neighboring countries of Venezuela and Ecuador.
The earthquake’s epicenter was near San José del Palmar, approximately 400 kilometers west of Bogotá. Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management reported the magnitude as 7.4 and stated that it occurred at a depth of 79 kilometers. Chocó Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi reported injuries and significant structural damage in Quibdó, the provincial capital, while officials continue to assess the extent of the damage.

7.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Japan
Prior to this, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto, located on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface. It affected the western region of Kumamoto, situated approximately 900 kilometers (540 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
