A deeply shocking case has emerged from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where 72-year-old Udaybhanu Biswas—a resident of Teli Mohalla within the Sadar Bazar police station limits—has been arrested on charges of concealing his daughter’s body inside his home. According to the police, Udaybhanu’s 35-year-old daughter, Priyanka, passed away on December 1, 2025, due to an illness; however, instead of performing her last rites, he locked her body inside a room within the house.
The matter came to light when neighbors complained to the police about a persistent, foul odor emanating from the house. Acting on this information, the police raided the residence on April 10. The police personnel were left stunned by the scene they encountered inside the room; Priyanka’s body had decomposed to the point of becoming a mere skeleton. After completing the necessary legal formalities, the police sent the body for a post-mortem examination and formally arrested the accused father on Wednesday.
Concealing the Decay with Perfumes and Fragrances
Preliminary investigations have revealed that following Priyanka’s death, Udaybhanu continued to live in the same house alongside her body for several days. To mask the stench rising from the house, he allegedly used perfumes and fragrances to ensure that no one would become suspicious.
However, as time passed, the foul odor intensified to such an extent that it became unbearable for the residents of the neighborhood to continue living there. Consequently, locals alerted the police, leading to the unraveling of the entire case.
The Accused is a Retired Administrative Officer
According to the police, Udaybhanu Biswas is originally from West Bengal and had retired from the Education Department, where he served as an administrative officer. Everyone remains baffled that an individual who was educated and held a position of responsibility could treat his own daughter’s remains in such a manner.
Given the gravity of the case, the police arranged for a psychiatric evaluation of the accused at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Medical College. Following the assessment of his mental state, he was taken into custody on Wednesday. Currently, the police are working to determine whether the incident was driven by superstitious beliefs or if the accused’s mental state was the primary underlying cause.
