Bengal | TMC flags post-poll violence, alleges vandalism of party offices; BJP refutes charges, India

Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in West Bengal, incidents of violence have been reported across the entire state.

बंगाल में बवाल, चुनाव नतीजों के बाद कई जगह हिंसा, कई TMC दफ्तरों में आगजनी, कहीं तोड़फोड़

Incidents of arson and vandalism at Trinamool Congress offices were reported across West Bengal as BJP workers celebrated their resounding victory in the state.

Police stated that since Monday afternoon (May 4, 2026), crowds have vandalized TMC offices in Kolkata’s Tollygunge and Kasba areas; in the suburbs of Baruipur, Kamarhati, and Baranagar; and in the districts of Howrah and Berhampore.

An official from the Election Commission of India (ECI) stated that strict action would be taken against those involved in these acts of hooliganism and violence, adding that a report has been sought from the local police to initiate further proceedings.

However, BJP leader Rahul Sinha dismissed allegations that any member of his party was involved in the vandalism, suggesting instead that it could be the work of rival factions within the TMC expressing their frustration with party leaders following the election results.

In the Bijoygarh-Netaji Nagar area of Tollygunge, a mob vandalized the election office of TMC candidate and former minister Arup Biswas. Some members of the crowd were seen kicking broken hoardings before dispersing from the scene.

At the Ruby Crossing, a mob carrying BJP flags vandalized the office of TMC Councilor Sushanta Ghosh.

Condemning these incidents, the TMC stated on X (formerly Twitter), “The BJP has revealed its true colors immediately after coming to power.”

“Their goons launched a violent attack on our party office in Murshidabad. Vandalism and anarchy—this is the true face of the BJP. It signals the BJP’s descent into gutter politics,” the post added.

Alleging an attack on its candidate in Udaynarayanpur, Howrah, the party stated, “The brutal attack on our candidate, Samir Panja, is proof of their violent mentality. This is not democracy; it is sheer hooliganism.” Shreya Pandey, the TMC candidate from Maniktala in North Kolkata, shared a video on social media featuring a middle-aged party leader whose shirt was stained with blood; she alleged that the individual was her election representative and had been beaten by BJP workers following the vote count.

She lost to the BJP’s Tapas Roy by a margin of 15,644 votes.

The TMC posted a video on social media purportedly showing its party office in Siliguri being set on fire. PTI could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.

In the Panihati Assembly constituency—where Ratna Debnath, the mother of the victim in the R.G. Kar Hospital rape-and-murder case, defeated the TMC’s Tirthankar Ghosh by 28,836 votes—an office belonging to the Mamata Banerjee-led party changed hands overnight.

The TMC’s Noapara candidate, Trinankur Bhattacharya, and Barrackpore’s Rajab Chakraborty were allegedly manhandled and escorted out by CAPF personnel while leaving the vote-counting centers.

The BJP’s Rahul Sinha condemned the violence but stated that it could not be compared to the situation in 2021, when—immediately after the vote count—the TMC had attacked their office-bearers and set fire to several party offices, while the state police took no action.

He added, “However, this time, the police and central security forces were taking prompt action.”
