A massive fire broke out on Wednesday morning in Guradi village, under Mori tehsil of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, causing extensive damage. The fire, which started around 5:30 AM, quickly spread, creating panic in the village. Three residential buildings were completely gutted, and 13 animals perished in the blaze.
According to reports, the fire spread so rapidly that the villagers had no time to react. Four cows, one bull, seven goats, and one sheep were burned alive. The affected families suffered significant financial losses due to the death of their livestock. The flames and plumes of smoke were visible from a distance, creating an atmosphere of fear throughout the village.
People were sleeping when the fire suddenly broke out.
Most people were asleep in their homes when the fire started. The commotion woke them up, and villagers rushed out of their houses to save themselves. They immediately began trying to extinguish the fire using buckets and whatever resources were available. Meanwhile, the authorities were informed of the incident.
Upon receiving the information, teams from the Revenue Department, police, and disaster management reached the spot. With the help of the villagers, and under the supervision of administrative officials, the fire was finally brought under control after considerable effort. Fortunately, there were no human casualties, but the loss of property and livestock is reported to be substantial.
Short circuit or cooking fire suspected
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Initially, a short circuit or a spark from a cooking fire is suspected, although the administration has not officially confirmed this. A team from the Revenue Department is assessing the damage so that the affected families can be provided with compensation under disaster relief. The administration has appealed to the villagers to remain vigilant and has assured them that all possible assistance will be provided to the affected families.
Fires are common in hilly areas during the winter months. The risk of such accidents remains high due to wooden houses and traditional heating methods.
