The CBI team arrived 10 days ago
Sonam Wangchuk confirmed to news agency PTI that a CBI team visited his organization, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL), about 10 days ago. The team brought an order with them, stating that the investigation was being conducted based on a complaint from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Wangchuk said, “The team informed us that this investigation was initiated based on a complaint of alleged violation of FCRA regulations. We have already clarified that our organization operates in a completely transparent manner and fulfills all legal obligations.”
Investigation Underway for Some Time
According to officials, this investigation into FCRA violations has been underway for some time. Documents related to the organization are being scrutinized. However, the CBI has not yet filed a formal case.
Action Amid Recent Protests
Sonam Wangchuk has recently become the face of the ongoing movement for statehood for Ladakh and constitutional protection under the Sixth Schedule. Four people were killed and dozens injured during violent protests in Leh on Wednesday. The central government also accused Wangchuk of inciting the mob by citing the Nepal Generation-G protests in his statements.
What is FCRA?
The FCRA, or Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, is a law that regulates and controls the use of foreign funds in India. Violations can result in the organization’s recognition being revoked and legal action being taken against those responsible.
