Tensions escalated on the streets of London on Saturday when the ‘Unite the Kingdom’ march organised by British radical leader Tommy Robinson turned violent. About 1.5 lakh people attended the rally, but clashes broke out between police and protesters when the crowd turned violent. Bottles were thrown, policemen were attacked and anti-riot squads had to be deployed when the situation went out of control.

According to the Metropolitan Police, 26 policemen were injured in the clashes, four of whom are in critical condition. Some had their noses broken, while others had their teeth broken. At the same time, one officer suffered a spinal injury. The police have taken action and arrested 25 people so far and the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said that a large number of people had come in the name of peaceful demonstration, but some groups gathered with the intention of spreading violence and tried to break the security cordon.
Counter demonstrations and crowd control
About 1.5 lakh people attended the rally, while in response to this, about 5 thousand protesters took part in a rally organized under the name ‘March Against Fascism’. These people raised slogans like “Refugees Welcome” and “Destroy the Far-Right”.
American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was also remembered during the march. A minute of silence was observed in his memory and the bugpiper played the tune of “Amazing Grace”.
Tommy Robinson and the atmosphere of slogans
Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is the founder of the English Defense League and is counted among Britain’s biggest far-right faces. His supporters raised slogans like “Stop the Boats”, “Send Them Home” and “We Want Our Country Back” during the rally, which further inflamed the atmosphere.

Nepal: Here youth took to the streets demanding unemployment, corruption and the return of the monarchy. The movement started peacefully but later turned into violence, leaving dozens dead and hundreds injured.
France: There were massive protests against objectionable laws and economic policies. Clashes broke out between police and protesters in Paris and other cities and government property was damaged.
