A Dalit engineer working in the electricity department in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district was brutally attacked by BJP worker Munna Bahadur Singh in his office on Saturday. The incident has sparked outrage after a video of the attack went viral on social media.
According to superintending engineer Lal Singh, the attacker not only attacked the engineer but also used casteist slurs. The injured victim told reporters that around 20-25 people barged into his office without any provocation. One of them was former BJP mandal president Munna Bahadur Singh, who allegedly led the attack.
“Munna Bahadur Singh came with 20-25 men and started beating me without asking any questions. He hit me on the head with a shoe, punched me and used casteist slurs. Other staff members intervened and saved me,” the engineer said.
In the viral video, Munna Singh is seen shouting angrily at the officials and then running towards the engineer. Though he was stopped for a while, he soon returned with a shoe and attacked the engineer multiple times. The injured engineer later underwent a medical checkup and filed a police complaint. He also pointed out that the office’s CCTV cameras were not working, and video evidence was obtained from an employee who recorded the attack.
Meanwhile, Munna Bahadur Singh denied the allegations, claiming that he and his supporters were the victims. Speaking to reporters from the district hospital, bandages were visible on his body. “We had gone there with an application. The engineer asked us to wait. When we demanded a hearing and threatened to stage a dharna, he misbehaved with us. He and his employees grabbed our collars, beat us and also attacked us with sharp weapons,” Singh alleged.
The engineer strongly rejected Singh’s counter-claims and said the attack was unprovoked and one-sided.
Ballia Additional Superintendent of Police Kripa Shankar has confirmed that a case has been registered against Munna Bahadur Singh under relevant sections of the law. Police teams have been formed to search and arrest him.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of government officials in offices and highlighted the caste-based hostility that continues to prevail in Uttar Pradesh.
