Strong earthquake tremors struck Japan early this morning, causing widespread panic. The earthquake, which hit the central part of the country, had an initial magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale. As the ground began to shake, people rushed out of their homes and buildings.

There have been reports of items falling and shop windows shattering in several locations. According to local media, more than 20 people have been injured.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the earthquake occurred at 1:04 AM. Its epicenter was located approximately 40 kilometers underground in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture. The most intense tremors were felt in the city of Chita, in Aichi Prefecture, which registered an intensity of ‘upper 5’ on the Japanese seismic scale. Tremors with an intensity of ‘lower 5’ were also felt across various areas in Aichi, Nagano, and Gifu prefectures. Several aftershocks followed the initial earthquake. Given the seriousness of the situation, the Japanese government has established an emergency liaison office to gather information from the affected areas and expedite relief efforts.

What is the update regarding a potential tsunami?

Following the earthquake, the primary concern was the risk of a tsunami. However, the Japan Meteorological Agency has clarified that there is no threat of a tsunami, and no tsunami warning has been issued. Nevertheless, the agency has advised residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant over the coming days, as the possibility of further strong tremors cannot be ruled out.

Why is Japan so seismically sensitive?

Japan is among the countries most prone to earthquakes in the world. This is primarily because it is situated in a region of the Pacific Ocean known as the ‘Ring of Fire.’ In this region, several tectonic plates collide, and their movement triggers seismic activity. This is why Japan frequently experiences earthquakes of varying magnitudes. Looking at major earthquakes from the past few years:

  • In January 2024, a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula. This event claimed the lives of over 300 people and caused widespread destruction of buildings. Subsequently, in August 2024, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred near Miyazaki.
  • Prior to this, on March 11, 2011, a devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake shook Japan. The massive tsunami it generated caused severe damage to the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Approximately 20,000 people lost their lives in this disaster.
