Why do earthquakes occur?

Experts explain that there are seven types of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface that are in constant motion. When these plates collide forcefully, the area of impact is known as a fault line. Furthermore, when excessive pressure builds up, the plates may fracture, allowing energy from deep underground to escape. This upheaval beneath the Earth’s surface is what we call an earthquake.

The severity of an earthquake is measured using the Richter scale. An earthquake measuring less than 6 on the Richter scale is generally not considered intense, as it typically results in only mild tremors. Conversely, an earthquake measuring between 7 and 9 on the Richter scale can lead to severe consequences, ranging from the collapse of buildings to the triggering of tsunamis. Furthermore, when an earthquake measuring above 9 on the Richter scale occurs, it brings massive destruction in its wake.
