Amidst serious allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct leveled by female journalists, the Delhi government has decided to amend the order it issued on October 5. Vivek Bhagat will not be entrusted with this additional administrative responsibility until the departmental inquiry is concluded.
Delhi Government’s Statement on ‘X’
The Delhi government clarified the situation late at night via its official ‘X’ handle. The government stated that it is amending the order regarding the assignment of additional ADCP charges to 12 officers of the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service (DANIPS) to exclude Vivek Bhagat’s name.
According to the government, the process of assigning additional responsibilities to these officers had commenced on August 25—well before the incident at Jantar Mantar took place.
The official statement noted that ACP Vivek Bhagat himself requested not to assume the additional charge until the investigation into the alleged harassment claims made by female journalists is completed and a satisfactory conclusion is reached.
Following his request, the government decided to modify the October 5 order. The revised order now specifies that the additional charge will be assigned only to the remaining 11 officers. Controversy Escalates Following Jantar Mantar Incident
The controversy erupted during a protest against the Election Commission held at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. Three female journalists leveled serious allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct against the police officers responsible for maintaining law and order during the demonstration.
The incident sparked outrage among journalists’ associations and independent journalists. Demands for an impartial inquiry and action against the accused police officers intensified.
Investigation Handed Over to Crime Branch
Acknowledging the gravity of the matter, the Delhi Police issued a statement on Sunday confirming that complaints had been received from female journalists in the New Delhi district. The police stated that the investigation has been transferred to the Delhi Police Crime Branch to ensure a fair and transparent probe.
Meanwhile, several independent journalists staged a protest outside the Sansad Marg police station, demanding the immediate registration of an FIR and strict action against the accused officers.
The investigation is currently underway, and ACP Vivek Bhagat will not be given the additional charge of ADCP until the departmental inquiry is concluded.
