Floodwaters have entered several villages in Kushinagar following the breach of the Narayani River’s AP embankment. A section of the embankment, measuring approximately 70–100 meters, has collapsed, and 20–25 villages are facing a looming flood threat.

The risk of flooding has escalated in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, due to the breach of the Narayani River’s AP embankment. The embankment collapsed late Monday night near Chain Patti in Tatwa Tola and Jawahi Mali Ehtamali within the Tamkuhiraj Tehsil. Subsequently, river water began rapidly entering the surrounding villages. Upon receiving news of the breach, administrative and police officials rushed to the site. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties so far.
According to locals, the water level of the Narayani River had dropped to approximately 2.54 lakh cusecs around midnight on Monday. As the water level receded, riverbank erosion intensified. The situation deteriorated due to “rat holes” in the embankment and persistent seepage, eventually leading to the AP embankment’s collapse. The breach has put around two dozen villages at risk of flooding.
Seepage persisted for three days before the embankment breached
Local resident Sanjeev Yadav told IANS that the embankment breached between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM. He stated that the embankment had been gradually eroding for about three days, with seepage occurring along a stretch of nearly two kilometers. He alleged that adequate measures had not been taken beforehand to safeguard the embankment. He added that flood-affected residents are currently sheltering on the embankment or at the homes of relatives, and arrangements for food and drinking water have not yet been made. Another local resident stated that 20 to 25 villages have been affected by the breach of approximately 100 meters of the embankment. Meanwhile, according to Ritesh Singh, a section of the embankment measuring about 70 to 100 meters has collapsed. He reported that while the flood-affected villagers are safe, their belongings have sustained damage. He noted that the embankment had been leaking for three days before suddenly breaching late Monday night.
Instructions to NDRF and SDRF
Upon learning of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the matter late at night. He sought details regarding the entire situation from the Gorakhpur Divisional Commissioner, the ADG, and the District Magistrate of Kushinagar. The Chief Minister directed officials to immediately relocate affected villagers to safe areas and ensured that there would be no negligence in relief and rescue operations.
The Chief Minister continued to monitor the situation closely throughout the night. Following his directives, teams from the administration, police, and disaster management are actively working at the site. Instructions have also been issued for NDRF and SDRF teams to reach the location and conduct large-scale rescue operations. Currently, the administration’s priority is to evacuate affected people safely and intensify relief and rescue efforts in the areas impacted by the embankment breach.
